art life
Dear Mike
Artist residencies are generally for artists who have
graduated already and can give some kind of input to the
community either by way of producing public art or
tutoring/teaching or some other similar benefit. They
are not generally for non-practicing artists or students
who have not got at least a degree in art and usually
you would need an MA to even be considered.
A friend of mine, who did an MA at Chelsea with me, went
to the USA on a residency and managed to do quite a lot
of work and enjoyed it very much.
If the post grad course you are trying for is any good,
they will expect three basic things from you. Firstly
they will need to be convinced that you are likely to
continue to make art once you have completed the course.
Secondly they will expect to see that your work is of a
high standard and thirdly that you understand your work,
why you are making it and be able to articulate that.
Bill
