Removing tool marks - Hydrochloric Acid
Dear Pete,
Thanks for the chemistry lesson. Its good for all of us amatures to be
reminded of the hazards in working in stone, or for that matter, all the
other form of art.
In my mind, the phrase ,"use a good dust mask", comes from seeing people
carving stone and using a cheap painters mask. These are the little white
masks that are held on your head with a rubber band. They are better than
nothing , but not by much.
The mask I use comes from Granite City Tool Co., in Barre Vermont. Its
manufactured by MSA, Mine Safty Appliances Co. The fit is tight but
comfortable, and has replacable cartridges , so you can switch from dust
protection to chemical protection easily and quickly. The mask dosen't get
in my way, or fog up my glasses! It costs about $50.00, and is worth every
penny.
After working with granite for 20 years, my lungs are still clear. I hope to
get another 30 at least. When I read questions from beginners wanting know
how to work in sandstone and granite ,I worry. A short exposure to high
concentrations of the wrong kind of dust can permanetly damage your lungs.
I really do appreciate the sharing of information on this format. Being
reminded and learning about health and safty issues has to be an ongoing
learning process.
Thanks, and get a GOOD dust mask!
George Graham
