Close to the stone
This has been a truly interesting discussion ("close to the stone") and I'm
glad Maureen added her comments on letter carving, especially with reference
to slate. Lettering has been commonly found on gravestones and in
architecture, but it's also finding its way into sculptural works -- the
Millennium Stones and other stele by Richard Kindersley in the UK come to
mind. I've been researching and writing for my book on slate art -- how I
wish I'd read these recent discussions BEFORE I sent the manuscript to the
publisher!
Thank you all for taking so much time to share your thoughts on stone
carving and sculpture. Every art student should be reading the
StoneLearning site.
