sandblast sandstone
Hi Cathy,
I have used abrasive blasting equipment to get interesting effects on
sandstone, but usually in conjunction with other tools like saws, core
drills and hand tools. The sandblaster by itself is not as effective as
other tools for removing stone, and it's a bit harder to control what you
are doing with it too. It's best for removing tool marks and producing an
all-over texture.
I've used stoneblast tape to sandblast a design on slabs prior to
hand-carving background details deeper. The sandstone has to be sealed first
to get the tape to stick.
I've also used sheet steel templates for repetitive patterns (simple
outlines). The sandblaster is great for boring holes in sandstone, blasting
through a hole cut in sheet steel which protects the rest of the stone.
However- the air flow must be 100PSI at 35 cf/m for best results. That's
more than a portable compressor can provide.
Finally- never use silica sand for blasting and always use a proper booth
with an extractive exhaust system- have fun!
Simon
