Stone as an offshoot of the Industrial Revolution in the UK
Hello the list,
My name is Frank Hunter, formerly of Padiham, Lancs., England.
I was taught dry stone wall construction c1948. Not an apprenticeship, just
on the job training whilst working on the County road crew at Blacko, Lancs.
I am interested in the upsurge of the stone industry during the Industrial
revolution, mainly in the north of England. Where did all the necessary
craftsmen come from, who opened up the new quarries and how were the
standards set for building stones, setts and flag paving.
I would be gratefull if anyone can point me towards books or any other
sources which might answer these and other questions.
Thank you
Regards,
Frank
