Soapstone carving
I am used to carving in marble and Portland limestone and had planned to get
hold of some for the students of a sculpture class that I teach. However, I
have just discovered that at the college we have numerous blocks of
soapstone available to use. I have never carved soapstone before and would
appreciate any tips on the particulars of carving it. I've heard that it can
be carved even with a knife. Is a point, punch or chisel usually used? What
are its charactoristics (besides soft)?
In terms of health and safety, I hear it is quite hazardous and a dust mask
is essential. Can anyone reccomend which type would be best.
Many thanks,
Rachel Huggett
