Soapstone carving
HIHO Rachel,
In addition to the fine suggestions already made, yes you are right:
Granite, Soapstone and Sandstone are silicates which (technically speaking)
is French for "pointy little devils that must not be snorted." (Don't quote
me) A good mask that seals against the face is a must!
When introducing soapstone to some students, i used to file on a piece of
stone in a bright light and then have them watch the lighter-than-air
particles wafting upward or wherever the breeze goes. And inhaling is a
kind of introverted breeze. If your clothes are full of that dust, you can
still get a snootful after the mask has come off. I often work near a large
fan to suck much of the dust completely away from my work area, whether
indoors or out.
Be Well,
Doctor Ron
