Subject: Soapstone carving

I have been reading the discussion about soapstone carving with interest. I
am a relative newcomer to stonecarving, with two limestone one alabaster and
one small soapstone piece completed so far. I am currently carving a largish
piece of soapstone (65kg). I have two questions which I would appreciate
advice on:
1. The supplier assured me that soapstone would be suitable for
outdoors. From what I have read since about its softness etc I have come to
doubt this. Has anyone any experience of leaving soapstone outside for
years? Or is frost and freezing the main danger?
2. The discussions about beeswax and linseed oil interest me. I have
always just used graded wet and dry to polish my stones. Is the
beeswax/linseed oil type of finish suitable for outdoor stones or only
indoor ones? And can I also use this finish on alabaster and limestone?
And yes, before you say it, I have a good quality face mask!!
Cheers,
LesleyC

Finally, several thin layers of boiled linseed oil are applied.

Quoted text begins.Excess oil should be wiped off and the stone should sit between coats
overnight. It is important not to put too heavy a coat of oil on at one
time. Several thin coats is superior to a heavy dose.
End of quote.
