Stone as an offshoot of the Industrial Revolution in the UK
For Frank Hunter:
I found an old book in the Oxford City Library in England that might have
some of the information you asked for about the stone industry history. But
I suspect this book may not be easily found in Canada. But then, who knows?
Maybe it was a best seller! :-)
Oliver Bowles wrote "The Stone Industries: Dimension stone, crushed stone,
geology, technology, distribution" in 1934 and the book was published by
McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. in London.
I was researching the use of slate in commerical uses and found slate
mantels and decorated fireplace surrounds (both carved and painted), as well
as marbleized (or enamelled) slate products. There was even something
called Struco which superimposed a photo image of slate panels through a
chemical process.
My book on slate art is in the works. I should see the page proofs sometime
soon. Good luck with your search, I know how time-consuming it can be.
Best of luck,
Judy Buswick
