Soapstone carving
We use buffing pads that are cotton. Readily available
from most sculpture supply houses. (I got mine from
Stone Sculpture Supply in West Palm Beach, Florida, but
don't have the number handy.)
All I can tell you about the compound is that it is pale
green, and comes in a brick ( I purchased it some years
ago and can't remember the grade of abrasive).
I also purchased it from the West Palm beach firm. I
have students take the sanding to at least 600 grit, and
then buff with the green compound, followed by a clean
buff.
Then we apply the oil. Keeping oil out of some areas is
tricky. I have had some success with slowly approaching
the area with q-tips. You may try a resist as suggested
for sandblasting-but I have never experimented with that
technique.
