Stone as an offshoot of the Industrial Revolution in the UK
Frank,
I have a book by Mark Batten titled Direct Carving In Stone . The first
american edition is by Transatlantic Arts Inc. , done in 1966 is what I
have. The 1st edition ( in England ), by Studio Books in 1957 was called,
Stone Sculpture by Direct Carving . In it the author spends some time
discussing regions in Britain where good carving stone could be found. Also
where stone could be found in other parts of the world. The tools and quarry
methods of the day are also covered. Its my impression that the time period
that the author was coming from was from the turn of the 20th century. In a
general way it might help you . As a how to book from that period, its one
of most concise and informative books on direct carving I've ever read.
Good luck,
George Graham
