I would like to understand in some detail stone cutting and quarrying techniques
Jay:
In Carrara, (Miselia) Italy, at the quarry there is an interesting display
of quarrying techniques used over 2000 years on the
local white marble. There are still some marks in the quarry where Roman
slaves actually used pick axes to remove blocks of white marble.
The techniques of quarrying are usually customized to the specific stone and
historical period. Even today there are different techniques used for granite,
slate, soapstone, sandstone, serpentine etcetera.
Best of luck in your study,
Rick Rothrock
