Identifying Beach Pebbles for Carving?
Hi all,
I thought I should add a note of caution re harvesting
what looks like an abundant supply of materials
conveniently left by nature for our use.
Many of you will know that I collect almost all of my
stone from the bush.
Australia may be a little different to other parts of
the world as far as government regulations go for
activities such as this but I doubt it.
Yes I know you would assume that no harm can be done if
we take the odd pebble, lump or even boulder to convert
into sculpture but it seems it that it is all to do with
precedents and problems caused by the people who took
too much, wrecked a natural habitat or two, and, in
short, spoilt things for everyone else.
There can be frightening fines for "stealing" from the
environment so ... make sure that you all check with
your appropriate government agencies, get the right pass
and pay the fee if there is one. Ignorance of the
regulations are rarely an acceptable excuse and you may
think that you've got away with it but remember if you
exhibit your work and proudly name the material in your
catalogue someone could easily report you the
appropriate agency!
I have found that these government agencies can be very
helpful, they are not necessarily the enemy of people
like us, in fact, some of the best deposits of stone
that I use have been suggested by government officers.
I know its a hard one to get your head around, every kid
takes a few pebbles and shells. The prettier the stone
the more people seem to want to take it away and away
and away 'til there none left at all.
Regards Clive
