Identifying Beach Pebbles for Carving?

First off - thank you for your reply (I'm relieved that
none of the replies I got intimated that that the idea
was 'mad'! lol)...
The idea of working with slate has intrigued me for some
time - and it's funny you should mention it. Although my
first experiments with it were to actually paint onto
the slate (I started with old discarded roofing
slates!)...Then to engrave onto it.
Slate has that rugged organic and primordial texture to
it that I like.
So thanks for your reply it was most encouraging.
