Identifying Beach Pebbles for Carving?

...Thanks Clive.
A VERY good point. My local authority does indeed have
very strict policies on the gathering of sea shore stone
and rock (particularly as costal erosion is a big issue
here abouts). This is precisly why I want to learn more
about the costal stones and pebbles. If I can find a
type of pebble/stone that suits and I can source the
same material from a convensional quarry - then that'll
be terrific.
...I am also looking in to other alternative materials
that will give me the look and feel of the natural
pebbles (so advice or suggestions here would be
appreciated).
One again - a good comment by yourself...Especially in
these ecologically minded times.
Cheers...
