Beverly,

From your description, if it is dense like iron, then it
sounds like a marcasite nodule. Marcasite is a form of
iron sulphide, like pyrite, with a specific structural
form, cauliflower like as you said, and weathers rusty.
Often falls apart when exposed to the weather.
