Nodule in Limestone
Hi Guys,
Thank you all for taking the time to chat, I am SO chuffed with and about
this group. It reinforces what I've always maintained over the years with
youngsters, that if you pluck up the courage to ASK then (if they have time)
there is / are an army of people out there who take a real pride in what
they do and are only too happy to share a little of they're hard won
knowledge.
As I said to someone recently whenever I get myself a new piece of stone and
have come to some kind of decision as to what I'm gonna do. Instead of just
going in and roughing out the piece, I experiment with the WASTE, find out
about the particular stone. (Though I try to hang on to a small lump to go
into my growing library of stones).
How hard I can go in, how fine a detail it will take, how deep I can
undercut it, will it take a polish. And before you know it you're getting
down to your roughed out idea and you've learned a whole lot about that
particular lump of stone, and can proceed with greater confidence armed with
new knowledge.
I am really looking forward to Dr Tim Palmer's input later. This all helps
for a greater understanding of our chosen medium.
Yes John, I know what you mean, if nothing else I've learned to leave the
little blighters alone. Work round them a while and then come back and work
them with a fine file taking them down to the finished surface. So that the
end up as an interesting blemish on the finished piece as opposed to a damn
great crater that mars the piece if one goes in like a loony.
Are you in "the trade" John?, the reason for asking is I'd like to get my
hands on a dictionary of stone or the stone masons trade or some kind of
terminology connected with the carving of stone. Does such a book exist?
See, one is never too old to learn.
The old fart is signing off for now.
Thank you all once again.
Tony
