hammers and mallets
To Jerry in Williamsburg and everyone else;
Sounds like a hammer I use, though there were no maker's marks on it when
I acquired it. See if the hammer pictured on bottom of my page:

is what you are discussing.
When I bought it from an antique tool dealer a few years back, it had a
severe chip out of one face. Since I was planning on using it rather
than admiring it, I carefully cut the two faces down about 3/8" on each
side to remove the chip and (on the other face) to keep it balanced. I
does have an excellent wieght and is comfortable when I need a small
steel hand hammer.
