Hammers on Stone by Peter Smith is a book about the history of granite on
Cape Ann. There's a lot of bluestone and fine grained granite in that area.
There are very inexpensive bluestone pavers/flagstones at many of those
local stone supply shops. It'd be worth your time to go in there and spend
10 bucks, experiment with a few different varieties to see how they look,
handle, etc. Once you spend some time with the smaller pieces, you'll be
ready for a block. One of the finest grained granites I have ever come
across, with even color and movement is quarried out of Westerly, RI. Call
Comolli granite at 401-377-2530 if that interests you. I don't know which
direction you're leaning when you say "cutting and shaping", but maybe that
will help.
