Limestone block
I'd like some feedback from people that have "installed" large slabs
(10k-15k lbs) of limestone to an outside site. I'd like to say that I am
only doing the lettering and there is a structural engineer on board that
designed and signed off on what follows. As someone that has set many
gravestones and plaques, I have to say this scale is intimidating and I just
want to throw out the details for you all to absorb and comment on.
One limestone slab measuring 12'x13"x6'. It will stand upright and the
corners will be drilled and broken so it has a "mountainous" look to it. The
engineer has poured a concrete footing that is13'4"x2'5"x3', so there is an
8" perimeter around the base of the stone. The site is on a hill and he
excavated until he hit stone, and then poured. Austin pretty much sits on a
limestone quarry. He put 6 j-bolts in the foundation during the pour,
leaving 12" coming out from the top, where they will extend into the
limestone block. The j-bolts were laid off center, in a zigzag formation
and are 5/8ths and threaded.
If I'm remembering correctly, this was 14k lbs, pre-pitched. I don't
know how much weight we'll lose from the corners being removed. In doing so,
we took off nearly 19 sq. feet of serviceable area.
I'd like to know your thoughts about this amount of limestone sitting on
the concrete foundation with only the j-bolts (which will be slathered with
a 1-1 chemorset epoxy) and its own weight securing it. I will be carving an
inscription on one face and feel, what's a good word, concerned about the
security of the block to the foundation. Now I know the structural engineer
is responsible for this, I'd just like to hear feedback from the stone
community.
Lastly, I'm wondering about a setting compound, and would like some
advice here.
