Dear Tony,

I already have a modest foldable engine crane, it is often quite useful but
as you say they do have some limitations, some of these can be very
frustrating indeed and all come in to play when trying use them at their
maximum weight capacity, these are the limited hight of the lift itself, the
width of the front forks which severely limit the size of the stand you can
put your sculpture on and worst of all their inability to move on rough or
soft ground.

They are terrifying to use on any kind of slope.

When I built my current studio I opted for an overhead gantry system,
sometimes called workstations these days because I had found that anything
that has to go along the ground, even a good smooth concrete floor get
stopped by just about any stone chips that may be around. I settled for a
dirt floor, much nicer to stand on particularly in the winter and everything
gets moved form above.

regards Clive
