Simon?
Clive. In my old shop I used a two section high tubular
scaffolding with a piece of 4 inch steel square tube across the
upper frames and a 2 ton chain hoist hanging from the square
tube. Largest stone I lifted with that rig was around 4800 lbs.
Didn't try to roll it with that load. We once lifted a 6000 lb
+ mantle and rolled it into place by using two sections of
scaffolding side by side with two chain hoists, and it went like
clock work. Did spend about 3 days preparing every thing for
the lift, so that there wouldn't be any surprises once we got
the stone in the air. If you can find a 4 or 5 inch I beam, and
a rolling block that will fit it, you can probably do this
without any problem. However, you might want to look into
getting an all terrain forklift and operator for a few hours,
and avoid the what ifs. I only build scaffolding rigs in places
where we can't get a piece of equipment, or the clients budget
won't allow it. Good luck and let us all know how it works out.
