Clench - Shell Stone?
While in Florida last week I picked up a few pieces of what I was told is the
only native Florida stone. It is called coquina or shell stone. It appears
to be naturally compressed sea shells and is mined about 30 miles in from the
coast. The lumps look shells glued together. The big lumps of stones are
used for rip rap. The stone is also sawed into something like stepping
stones which are about an inch and a half thick and a foot square. They are
used like tile for decoration around fire places.
Is this stone similar to clench? Can it be carved usefully? I am thinking
about doing some simple designs on the flat stone for fireplace decoration.
