Diamond chain saw
I have three friends who have purchased the diamond chain saws for
sculpting. I have played around with the saw on a couple occasions.
In general they seem good for roughing out really large pieces.
Contrary to what you would think, they don't cut like a wood chain saw.
You cannot set the running blade on the top of a stone and cut through
the stone with any reasonable speed. They work by plunge cutting. You
plunge the blade into the middle of the area you want to cut, and then
pry upwards to move the cut up. I did not get much practice, but it
was not as easy as I would have guessed to make a straight cut.
Of the three friends who bought these saws, one ultimately sold the saw
to another sculptor, and the other two use them very infrequently. One
says he "woke up next to the saw in bed one morning and could not
recall what had happened the night before". Just got into a tool
frenzy I guess.
Good luck, Ken Barnes
