Subject: European sculpture project

I'd like to toss in a word or two about the sculpture project idea for
stone quarries. I'm a writer whose book on slate art will be published
this spring. Both Phillip King (now Pres. Of the Royal College of Art
in London) and Scotland's prolific sculptor Andy Goldsworthy have done
slate sculptures in quarries in Wales. Artists in residence at the
Welsh Slate Museum in Llanberis, North Wales have created works on site,
too. I know of two (and there must more) books of art photography based
on abandoned slate quarries.

Goldsworthy and others frequently talk about the "journeys" of stone.
This project just cries out for documentation -- written accounts of the
works and photographs of both the sources of the stone and the exhibit
sites. I'd love to work on something like this. Perhaps the
photographers I know (and there must be others) would also jump at the
chance. I do hope there's enough interest among the sculptors out there
to get it started. I'll bet there's grant money, for someone who's gone
through the art project process. I'd like to be a part of future
discussions.

Looking forward to other responses,
Judy B., sometimes known as "the slate lady" :-)
