Richard,
your idea about a carving event sounds like a lot of fun. there have been a
few recent events of a similar nature in the past couple of years done by
masons. here in the UK there was one in 1998 in gloucester and in york 2000.
canterbury cathedral is hosting another event next year. and in junas,
france last year they had a group who were normally competing working
together to create a roundabout instead. all of these have involved both
carving and masonry and have been erected as public art and benches. last
year in weymouth england i developed a smaller scale event that is awaiting
installation.
in light of the success of these events there may be quite a bit of support
around. i would be interested in hearing further about any plans or ideas
you have. i am especially interested in giving the general populace a more
specific appreciation of masonry and carving, the craft and history or work
with stone.
good luck, i look forward to hearing more.
