Hi everybody,
wow, I'm amazed at the feedback this idea has
generated.
What we now need to do, I think, is find a form of
gathering and developing ideas.
Our starting point, and what unites us as well, is the
material. This comes with a world of connotations as
to history, tradition, mythology, formal qualities,
references and is bound in social, political and
cultural issues. How about a wee brainstorming orgy of
issues. The 'mother' theme of mine wasn't meant as
theme as such, but to give an idea how the original
quarry site and the pieces in the exhibition could be
connected. What I want to say is, that I'm fairly open
to discuss this point. What I'm after is, apart from
the fun of it, the notion of stone as the originator
of things, the home-base as well as object of
transporting ideas in the minds ofthose, who live on
it (physically as well as metaphorically speaking).
I mean, that local stone, as 'mother earth' does have
an impact on local cultures and as such on the way
that we, as parts of this culture, feel about
ourselves, the world, politics, philosophy, et c.
In the same instance the way we, as the stonecarving
part of society have an impact on what happens to said
stone. Us being mobile and stone being bound to its
site (quarry) have an intimate relationship I think
and that opens most interesting and complex fields of
investigation.
That 'mother-child' relationship being quite complex
in itself (as far as I can tell, no children of my own
yet) is a very direct and maybe obvious parallel (or
mirror) to this relationship.
So that's my bit for the moment,
hope this is going to develop,
waiting for your ideas,
cheers
Richard
