drilling into soapstone
Jay, the suggestion of using a hole saw and paddle bits is a
good one. We often use these tools in softer limestone. The
problem will be if you are plunging deeper than the effective
depth of the hole saw (usually around 2.5 inches). In this case
you will need to cut your kerf, carve out the center to the kerf
depth, and then go back in with the hole saw and repeat the
process until you get to the bottom. The burr rasps for drills
or die grinders can aide you in this process and final smoothing
of the bottom.
Remember to wear a good quality respirator as the soapstone dust
is not good for your lungs, and as the soapstone, while soft is
rather dense, so these tools will over heat and loose their
sharp if you go at it too fast and hard. Good luck, JVC
