New York Carver
Hello,
After a steady dose of lurking around the board, I'd like to introduce
myself...
I apprenticed at St. John the Divine here in New York and later became
one of the few Yanks to sit for London's City & Guilds exam in stone
masonry. Most my living is spent on web design now, but I keep my hand
in the trade virtually with a cybershop at my web site, New York Carver.
The site has grown steadily to include photo galleries of stone carving
in cities I've visited, along with a series of articles on another
favorite topic, the Middle Ages.
For anyone interested in medieval or Gothic design: you're cordially
invited to drop by for several Gothic geometry lessons at the site.
In the US, stone masons and carvers still rely heavily on old copies of
E.G. Warland's book for setting out rose windows, arches, trefoil
tracery and the like. Most of my 'tips & tricks' are based on Warland's
work, along with that of Frank Hilton, who is also now out of print.
Currently, I offer a cheaply priced ebook on the subject that goes into
much greater detail, but it's not necessary to buy it to take advantage
of the diagrams available online.
Hope this helps. For any old hands who have suggestions about how to
improve on it, please give a holler.
Regards,
Joe Chiffriller
