Introducing myself: John Sutcliffe
In a message dated 02-12-12 06:13:33 EST, you write:
Quoted text begins.I'll come straight to the point; I want a change of direction in life and
want to become a professional stone mason/carver. I'm taking the plunge,
quitting my job, packing my girlfriend's suitcase, and moving to London next
year.
Has anybody out there got any tips for how I might make it happen? How did
you make it happen?
End of quote.
First -- congratulation! Its a terrifying move but one you won't regret.
How much training do you have in business? I'm assuming you're planning to
do this on your own hook, and haven't hired on anywhere as a carver. If
you're running it as a your own business -- be sure to actually run it as a
business! You'll need to know the basics of bookkeeping, business law, time
management (ha! what's that???) and a good bit on marketing. or be able to
hire someone who knows these... You may well find that the "administrivia"
of running your business will take almost as much time as your actual carving
-- if not more. make friends with it.
I wish you nothing but success! I do hope the economic situation in the UK
is better than it is over on this side of the water -- I had togo back to a
regular job this year (still have my business, just had to ratchet it down a
bit). Even if you're in a slump, fear not, you can work through it, and
economic downturns have to turn back up! =)
