Introducing myself: John Sutcliffe
John,
Hello. The first advice offered about making a business out of it is
exactly what I would suggest you do. I think the starving artist routine is
often just a result of bad, or no, business sense/planning. Take an
inventory of what you have; intellectually, physically, financially, etc.
Do you own the bare essentials for starting a career, how would you get the
materials and tools, etc.? Make a list of contacts, people currently in the
business, quarries you'd get materials from, museums, graveyards, or where
ever you want your work to go. I wouldn't quit a current job until I've
considered all the financial risks and rewards, done the homework necessary
to make such a step. Once you decide, be open to it all, each job will teach
you something, whether it's big or small, profitable, complex, horrendous,
that's how you gain experience and knowledge. Can you afford to do a non
paying apprenticeship? If so, I'd advise that, unless you are skilled and
your work commands payment. Anyway, good luck, if this is your passion, the
rewards are numerous.
Best,
Maureen
