colour on marble
Hi Oscar,
Very interesting question about coloring marble. I'm looking forward to
what others have to say, since I'm actually working on a piece which will
get 'coloured' when it's finished.

The piece I'm doing is carved from a grey/black mottled marble. Since I
want a couple of areas to be pure black, I'm planning on using some black
wood stain to color that area. My theory is that if one can use Watco wood
sealer to seal marble, then I can use wood stain also. I haven't tried it
yet (I need to finish sanding it before I apply the stain), so no
guarantees.
If it does work, you should be able to use 'stain' also. I would think
clear sealer mixed with powdered pigments or oil paint should work to get
flame colors.

Marble can and was painted with oil paints. An unsealed marble has similar
properties to traditional gesso, with the distinct advantage that it doesn't
react as much to the atmosphere. Now the painted marble tables I've seen
have always been indoor pieces, so I don't know how they would hold up to
outdoor conditions.
As for other paint media, such as acrylics, I don't know. (Since I'm not a
fan of plastic paint, I would think it could look a bit tacky -- smooth,
organic marble with garish plastic paint. But hey, prove me wrong!)
