colour on marble
Hi Oscar,
If the stone is dark, oil guilding works well. For flame effects,
it will also appear to 'shine'. Underpainting with a red enamel will
also improve the colour, and carving a shallow recess in which the
guilding lies will also give some protection from abrasion. It is
always worth using real gold (I use 23 3/4 carat double gold leaf) as
the fake leaf tarnishes. The tarnishing may actually be of benefit,
especially if combined with say copper or silver leaf too to give a
range of colours for your flame effect. If you use metals other than
gold, you may want to protect them from tarnishing futher by applying
a thin coat of varnish. Here's a picture of some limestone I did a
while ago (not the best photo though).
