Subject: Introducing -- myself <g>

Greetings Stone Folks, I am a newbie stone carver interested in abstract -
expressionistic, including cubist sculpting (I use the terms as they would
be used in painting). I am just starting to work in soapstone and alabaster
and have started with small pieces (actually I'm mostly sketching at this
point and making small functional things like candlestick holders and pen
trays). Although I've always loved art I'm a lousy draftsman, but scupture
seems to have just the leeway that I need <g> and I love the sensual aspect
of the stone. I'll try and check the archives for my questions first, but
please forgive me if I ask a question or two that has been asked before --
as a professor I have questions about everything <g>.

Okay, with that segue, I'll give you some personal data - I'm 48 and a
professor of animal ecology at the University of Georgia. If you're
interested in my professional activities and want to see a few pictures of
people and places you can visit my Univ. web site (URL below). Before
moving to Georgia in 1981, I lived in California and NY. I've been married
for 20+ years which must be a record for two Californians that met in the
70's, and my wife is a nutrition professor at the University too. We have
two daughters ages 6 and 10 3/4's and sometimes, after a bit of heavy-duty
parenting - grinding stone seems like just the appropriate activity <g>.

I have been interested in art for quite a while and have been buying and
selling 19th & early 20th century art (mostly paintings) for 15 years. I
have a web site for my art business (URL below) so have a look if that
interests you.

I don't know much about sculptors but I like the work of Arp, Archipenko,
Lipschitz (sp?), Calder and Manship. In fact, if anyone loves Calder I have
a signed litho of his that I'd trade for sculpting supplies/equipment (its
not on the web site).

Well what else to I like -- outdoorsy stuff, reading (any good suggestions
on technique books?), fountain pens, good coffee/wine/whiskey/food, travel.

Thanks to the list owners and active members who make it all worthwhile.

cheers, gary
