leveling
On a soft stone like alabaster a belt sander works well. Run a straight edge
over the surface and look for high spots. If you don't have a belt sander a
large rasp will work. Look for the teeth marks left by the rasp, if it is
flat you should be able to see marks on the whole surface. If you are
mounting the piece to a base you might want to try using two rods instead of
just one. This will help eliminate rock and keep the stone from twisting.
Getting the base good and flat should be the first step when carving stone. I
have often times forgot to do this and when I thought I was done with the
carving, well ... hope this helps.
