Subject:
symposiums
My name is Jesse Salisbury. My studio is in a small town on
the coast of Maine. I carve sculptures out of granite and
basalt. Recently I have been involved with efforts to start
a stone carving symposium in Maine. There is a lot of
interest but progress is slow. Out of the blue I was
contacted by someone in Washington state who is part of an
arts organization and seems to have the Town of CoeurdAlene
interested in working towards a symposium. I would love to
help out and participate.
There are some obvious difficulties because I live on the
opposite coast. Does anyone know sculpture organizations on
the west coast or of professional sculptors who have been
involved in this sort of thing. I have participated in
sculpture symposiums in Japan but have not been involved
with any yet in this country. There are many types of
symposiums. In the type I have been involved with artists
are invited to carve a sculpture that will remain in the
community and they receive some compensation for their work.
Any comments are appreciated.
Jesse
