Mallet and limestone
Hi,
My name is Mike and I am a novice stone carver. I recently stated carving
limestone with a mallet and mallet headed chisels. The mallet I am using is
a 5 inch nylon mallet weighing 1.2 kilograms (2 1/2 pounds). I can't believe
how confortable and pleasurable it is to carve with mallet. But it would be
nice to have a lighter mallet for detail work with mallet headed chisels. I
picked up a wood workers wooden mallet 17oz. and it is way too light. I am
thinking of drilling a hole in the center of the wood top of the mallet and
pouring in bit of molten lead, maybe 8 ounces worth. Any suggestions?
The question is what do mallet users use? What type of mallet of what
material and what weight is used for detail work? Or is there something
else?
Any ideas??
