Mike,

I hope to encourage you to keep on experimenting with
different kinds of hammers and mallets. The type of stone
and design of your sculpture will dictate what tools work
best for you. What works for me might not work for you.

I've made my own wooden mallets over the years , using many
different kinds of wood.

Cut 12 inches from a limb that is 6 to 8 inches in diameter.
Remove the bark and soft outer wood from the striking part
and cut away the bottom 6 inches to make a handle that is
part of the center. Its not too much work and you end up
with a mallet that has a handle that will never come loose!
No two mallets are the same.

If you come across some dry seasoned limbs of oak, beech ,
ash, apple, and dogwood , grab it and try it out. The
density, toughness, hardness, and bounce all differ
dramatically.

Good luck
George Graham
