Gallery Partnerships
Hi
This is a really interesting topic for me and I'm glad a discussion has been
opened up on the subject. I am intending to open a gallery in
Staffordshire, England during probably the next 18 months and am carrying
out as much research as I can in to the contractual side of selling artist's
work. Obviously the safest way forward for all parties is to have a very
clear and concise contract, but I did not consider issues such as selling
work away from the gallery but using gallery contacts - from a gallery's
point of view not necessarily an easy thing to prove!
I would be interested to hear what everyone's view is on the commission
taken by galleries. One artist I work with sells through a gallery that
adds 50% to his price. I haven't got to the situation yet where I can work
out expenses/overheads etc and see for myself if this is a fair amount.
What are your views?
And I would be interested to hear your general thoughts on contracts with
galleries - good experiences, bad experiences, examples of good practice, or
even examples of contracts that have worked for you. I want to make sure
that my gallery is a supportive environment for new and established artists
alike - and not all about getting the biggest commission I can get!
