Gallery Partnerships
Is this consignment or wholesale -- does the gallery sell it
for him or have they bought it from him? If he's set his
price at such and such, and is getting that price, I
wouldn't have any real heartburn over it.
In the states it seems more and more common for galleries to
charge a 50% commission. I personally won't be in such a
gallery -- in my opinion, if the gallery is charging 50%,
they should buy it from me wholesale. Just the principle of
the thing, mind you. Its kept me out of some galleries, but
that's a price I"m willing to pay. have heard from some in
the bigger venues -- New York, for example, that some
galleries are charging a 60% commission. That in my mind is
ludicrous -- why should someone else make more money on your
work than you do, without paying you up front for it?
But that's me.
