Gallery Partnerships
The way it works in Canada and myself: If a private gallery agrees to
represent you and sell your work, you must never, never undercut them. Also
when your prices are fixed at a certainly level, you must never go back, if
you do, you undercut your clients. I always sell at the price that are set
by the galleries and I never go back. There is never a sale on my works, I
do not consider myself a Kmart store. If you make the error of making sale,
you can be sure that the customer will hang on for or until your next sale.
After my contract is terminated with a gallery, I do not feel obligated to
pay them any commission. If you were to pay all the galleries a commission
because your works was seen there, I think you would have a lot of money to
pay out after a few years. Always be straight forward and honest with the
people representing your work and do not trust everyone wanting to sell your
art for you. A lot of dishonest people out there! I have been burned a few
times and it has made me a lot more cautious.
