Dear Gary

Your work would appear to have many examples of stone which is partly smoothed and partly not.

It is not reasonable to pass judgment on a particular work without seeing it in the round or even a photograph of it. Having said that, if the white bit in it glares at you and draws your eye to it, the chances are that it should not be there and the fact that it is on the "back" is not that relevant as sculpture is a 3 dimensional and can be viewed from any direction unless displayed otherwise. If you wanted to keep it rough, then maybe it should be roughed out in a way that does not show a single white spot. There is another point of view which is that if you like stone so much, why are you hitting it with a hammer and chisel?

If you are unhappy with what one teacher has said, ask a few more and get a consensus.

Bill
