Subject: How do you carve?

Hi,

The way I start with a sculpture is as follows: first the idea of what I
want to make, then I usually make a few croquis (drawing), then I proceed
with clay and make a maquette( small model). On the maquette, I usually make
all the errors that I might make in the stone. The maquette is made whereas;
it can be double triple and so forth, (the size of the sculpture). Then we
go hunting for a piece of stone; usually I do not purchase those nice square
blocks as they usually double in price. I buy a chuck of stone that the
sculpture will easily fit into, meaning: I buy the stone in accordance to
the shape of the sculpture. This does cut down on the extra stone that has
to be removed, thus it makers the shaping of the sculpture less complicated.
Some sculptors do not used this methods, they just start sculpting a piece
of stone until they see something and proceed from there. Usually all these
pieces are abstract, my sculptures are stylized and usually highly polished
therefore, everything has to be done systematically. Lots of work and
sometime lots of headaches, but it is highly satisfying!

I really hope this will help a bit, happy carving,

Guéganne
