special qualities? It seems quite a lot harder than, say, Limestone, but
does it need special tools?

Hello Wendy,

Recently I had to carve a stone called Yorkshire gritsone which I have
always thought to be a very hard abrasive stone.
It turned out to be quite soft, reasonably crisp and quite forgiving on
steel tools.
The job was to carve a shallow relief with lettering on a
constructed stone block plinth thingy in Manchester, where
Yorkshire gritstone has been lavishly used to repave the city
centre.I don't know if its the same stuff you intend to use. This
stone had grey and buff coloured layers runing through it,and
with it being freshly quarried (as opposed to using second hand
or some weathered boulder ) it was fairly easy. However I prefer Limestone,
(Hoptonwood,Purbeck,Portland)any day.Other sandstone I have used is abrasive
on tools, necessitating tungsten tools, and the dust is abrasive to lungs!
I don't have a website,so you can't view a picture unless I
e-mail an attachment to you.

yours,
Jon Cattan.
