The putty idea sounds OK but it would be prudent to make the initial hole much smaller than the required hole and then open it up in easy steps to get a clean hole, particularly with tipped drills as the tips are bigger then the shanks so they wont run true. By drilling a small hole first you will minimise the problem. Another problem is ensuring that the guide hole is round in the first place so drilling it out with a slightly larger hole but still smaller than the final hole should give better results.
