Slate- Blaenau Ffestiniog
all the quarries round blaenau Ffestiniog are now owned by McAlpines who
probably are only interested in large orders (architectural) but there is
one mine Llechwedd still privately owned tel 01766 830522 you can get large
pieces from the tip - where transport is the main cost
its up to a foot deep, several feet wide and can be in several meter long
lengths.
There is also a working quarry in Corris which is similar to the Blaenau
slate but i can't recall the name at the moment
Blaenau slate is pretty good for sculpture and weather proof - it doesn't
shear into planes quite so easily as the North Wales slates i think
