Polishing basalt, granite
Randy,
Becaues I've never used the kind of abrasive pads you are, I
can't advise you as well as I'd like. Hopfully, someone else
on the lists can pinpoint the problem. The general rules on
polishing granite are pretty basic. Use a lot of water, be
gentle, and be patient. Don't try to speed up when you are
on the finer grits. It may seem like you are acomplishing
nothing after a few minuts of 600 grit, but give it the same
amount of time as you spent on 320.
I always get more gentle as I get into the final grit. If
you think about it, the scratches you are removing are only
a few microns deep, so take it easy, and let the pads do the
work. I fine it facinating to polish up a piece of granite.
The stone is so rewarding to the person who sticks with it
and does a great job!
Regarding the use of wax, I don't think it would be
necessary if you do a good job of honing down your piece,
and it would dry out and possibly stain the stone also.
Experiment on a scrap piece before you treat one of your
finished pieces.
Good Luck
