Stone tools and books...
My limited experience with stone carving has been soapstone
... using woodcarving chisels and a knife. Didn't notice
any noticable dulling while working the stone, but did
notice they needed honing the next time I worked on wood.
Suppose I should put my plug in for supporting your local
blacksmith as a source for tools =)
And for those who have talked with me hammers, bear with
me. My day job is as a Tax Man (in Virginia...watch out
Jeff ;-) , so going a little nuts since December
