Looking for a used pneumatic carving tool
Chris;
I don't know anyplace or anyone in particular that might have a used pneumatic tool for sale, but I have bought several myself over the years from old carvers who had retired from working at the local (well an hour's drive) marble company. I got several leads from talking to then-current employees who knew somebody, etc.
If you are willing to make do, you can buy the pistol-shaped hammers made for ripping automotive sheet metal. The really cheap ones are only about $25-$30 at the big-box DIY stores, and they will last about 6 months (then just throw it away and get another one). You can spend $100 or more for the ones that last longer from industrial tool distributors, but if you're going to spend that much see if you can get a regular used carving hammer (that is about the going rate for a used one). They come with five or six chisels -- one of which is a point, and one or two flat chisels, and then some odd-shaped ones you might want to re-grind and/or cut teeth in. You can also buy replacement chisels pretty cheap and cut teeth in the flat chisels with a minimum of re-grinding.
If you get one of these pistol-grip type of hammers add a in-line valve so you have some control - the trigger is either full-on or full-off. You can't adjust the hammer down to a low purr (as for doing careful detail work), as you can with a regular carving hammer, but if you really want control you can use hand tools.
Good Carving to You,
Don
