2nd hand, home made and found tools
It's second nature to me to rummage through boxes of old tools
at carboot sales,2nd hand junk shops etc..
I can recommend the old 'Rawlplug' masonry drills which
were ubiquitous in the days before every household had before
electric drills.Rawlplug drills are like star drills and are made
of excellent steel, they come in different sizes although the larger ones
are rare. The shafts of these drills are fitted into
steel handles which I use as both mallet and hammer head.
I grind them carefully (avoiding burning) into punches and small chisels.
Another interesting type of drill I sometimes find are hollow
steel tubes with saw teeth cut in,they have an 'escape' hole for
dust in their shanks. They work a bit like 'saw holes'.I find that
they come in different qualities of steel. They are interesting to use as a
chisel as they work like 'claw gouges'
